What would happen if we could defund the billionaires and turn them back into ordinary citizens with no more control over the levers of power than you or I have?
Let’s say the public finally catches on to the truly endless US war that is still ongoing, the war that has been waged against workers by the wealthy elite since the industrial revolution of the 1800s. This has been a vicious class war waged by those who have everything against those who have little or nothing. If we could wrest control of government back from the wealthy, and we instituted a 98% wealth tax that reclaimed 98% of the liquid assets that the wealthy have accumulated (by fleecing the rest of us), then what would happen?
First off, the wealthy would be a lot less wealthy all of a sudden, and would need to rapidly pay off their outstanding debts and loans. To do this, they would have to start selling assets, including their Corporate-Owned-News (CON) outlets. This would reduce their ability to propagandize the American public and congress. They would also be forced to sell off business assets to come up with enough cash to keep the remainder of their ownings up and running. They would not be able to continue lavishly funding the think tanks that fill the buildings in Washington DC, nor would they be able to dump hundreds of millions of dollars on major universities in the US in order to influence their curricula.
The lack of funds would also prevent the no-longer billionaires from hiring thousands of lobbyists to flood congress with cash and misinformation, just as they could no longer dump money on politicians to buy their votes.
Then, for a final coup de grace to their power, the newly empowered people could urge the unbribed congress to pass legislation to limit “defense” contractors from making any more than a 10% profit above cost, with no cost overruns, period. That would drive most of these vile corporations from continuing to be the merchants of death as they would look for larger profit margins elsewhere. This would greatly disincentivize wars, and make them much less likely to occur.
For the love of money is the root of all evil. Indeed, money is a powerful addictive drug for some unscrupulous people and that means we need to regulate it tightly, just like other addictive drugs are regulated. That means no more unregulated capitalism. We need to bring back high tax rates for the top tier earners, and bring back strict banking regulations. We have to stop listening to the drug addicts who tell us that regulations are not needed anymore. Clearly, banking and corporate regulations are needed now more than ever.
The billionaires will tell you that this is pure fantasy, that it will never happen. They can say this with some confidence as they have more money and power now than at any time in human history. Even at the height of the robber baron era, no single person had the equivalent of $400 billion dollars to play with. Now there are many oligarchs in the US that have tens or hundreds of billions of dollars at their disposal to corrupt our government and make sure that the inequity reigns free forever. It certainly would not be an easy task to accomplish, but it really depends on whether or not the people can work together. The wealthy elites spend a lot of time telling people that they should hate poor immigrants, or hate the voters on the other political team. They are desperate to make sure you don’t pay any attention to the people behind the curtain, pulling all the levers of power. Don’t be fooled into focusing your anger on other working people, or poor people, they, like you, have no power. Focus your attention on the most powerful people in the world, the unscrupulous billionaires who have been waging war against you all your life.
Ah, yes, the takers.
Isn't it amazing how poor people are vilified as "takers" as the richest among us are venerated as "makers"? That attitude, that bias, must be reversed.
